Requesting Your SSL Certificate

To request your SSL certificate is quick and easy.

  1. In IIS Manager, open the properties of the web site and click on the tab "Directory Security".
Click on the button "Server Certificate..." and then choose Next.

  2. The default option is usually the one that you want, unless you are doing one of the other tasks.
If this is your first certificate, then you need to Create a new Certificate. Click Next once you have made your selection.

  3. You are now asked for a name on the certificate. What you put here is up to you, it doesn't play a part in your certificate name. In this example we are using the same name that the certificate is being applied for. The other options can be left alone. Click Next.

  4. You are now asked for the name of your company and Organization Unit. Not all certificate providers use this information, but you should ensure that it is correct. Click next after completing it.

  5. This next step is the important bit.
The common name is the name that you want to use on the SSL certificate.
For example, if you want your users to access the server with https://mail.domain.com/ then you need to enter mail.domain.com as the common name. No https, no / or index.html or anything else, just the name.
You cannot get a certificate on an IP address.
Your common name must resolve on the internet, so host.domain.local is not valid.
After entering your name, press Next.

  6. You are now asked some location information. This should be completed correctly, even though it isn't used by everyone. Click next.

  7. Finally you can choose where to save the request. Put it somewhere easily available. Click next and then finish.

  8. You can open the certificate request in notepad. It should look something like this:

  9. You now need to carry out a certificate request on the supplier's web site and copy and paste the text as above, including the -----BEGIN NEW CERTIFICATE REQUEST----- and -----END NEW CERTIFICATE REQUEST----- text when prompted.
