Other Services

Now you have got your connection, what else can you do with it? Here are a few ideas.
Check your broadband provider's terms and conditions to ensure that you can use some of these services.

Anti Virus Updates

No longer will you need to remember to update your anti virus software. Most packages come with an automatic update script that can be scheduled. Simply set it up to check for new updates every day. Then when new virus definition files are released your machines are automatically updated.
Just remember to check regularly that the update is working, and check the vendor's web site to ensure that you have the latest version.

Stock / News Tickers

These can be annoying on a dial up connection. You have to remember to start them when you go online, stop them when you have finished and they can auto dial to the Internet when you don't want them to.
Now you have a permanent connection, no more worries, just leave them running all the time. If they fail to update, then you know you have a problem.

Instant Messenger Clients

Leave your instant messenger client running all the time. You will then receive messages as they are sent. Can have it's drawbacks, so you may want to see if this works for you.
If you have problems, you may need to check your firewall configuration to ensure that the rights data packets are being let in so the software will work.

Private Web Site

Running a public web site may not be a good idea as the traffic could overwhelm your connection and your machine. However there is nothing to stop you running a private password protected web site. You could host your own start page so it is available from where ever you are. If your cable modem provider uses Dynamic IP addresses (DHCP) then use a Dynamic DNS service to ensure that you can always connect to your own system. There are even applications that will take your own Internet Explorer favourites and turn them in to a web page. Check the popular download sites for more information.

Netscape bookmarks are already stored as an HTML page (bookmark.html).

If you are going to host your own web site, then there are some precautions you should take. These are explained in depth on the Remote Access Page.

Handheld Updates

If you own a handheld computer, such as a Pocket PC and use a service like AvantGo, then check the configuration is correct and then you can make frequent updates. Leave the machine connected to your computer overnight and use a scheduler to kick off a hotsync just before you get up. Your machine will then be up to date when you a ready.
