Backup Dial up Access

Backup Dial up Access

Now you have broadband internet access, you might think that you can dispense with dial up access. While in most cases you can, you should still consider having an account that you can use in an emergency.

Most of the information on this page refers to the UK market, although some aspects will apply anywhere.

Why Have Backup Account?

If your broadband connection fails, then you will be unable to connect to the Internet. If you have a backup account, then you can start using that. If you have set yourself up correctly, with your own domain name, dynamic DNS and the like, then you should be able to continue operating close to normal while the line is repaired. Speed will be an issue, but at least basic browsing and sending email will be possible.

Possible Solutions

The sensible solution would be to have an unmetered dial up account as backup, possibly with a different ISP than your broadband provider. This will mean that if the problem is more serious affecting the entire ISP's operations, you can use someone else to connect.
However an unmetered dial up account will have a monthly charge.
One solution would be to share the account with someone else who only needs dial up access. For example, if you have relatives who don't want or cannot have broadband access, you could contribute to their account. All you need to do is find an ISP that allows you to register more than one number with them as a number using their service.

Another solution would be to have an account with another ISP that does not charge you a monthly fee. This would involve a call charge when you dial up, so could work out very expensive if your broadband link is down for any length of time.
