Making Best Use of a Broadband Internet Connection

With increased interest in broadband connections to the internet more people are asking about how they can make the best use of it. In this section of the site we share some of the techniques used with a broadband connection that allows the users to do what they need to do without exposing private information to everyone. While the term broadband is used extensively here, these techniques can be used with any kind of permanent internet connection such as cable modems and ADSL.

A lot of the information in this section is still being worked on and expanded as new solutions are discovered and implemented. Therefore you may find some areas lacking in content and depth.

Sharing the Connection
If you would like to share the connection between two or more machines, you have a number of options available to you. This page indicates what they are and an outline of what is involved. They can help you make a decision on which method you would like to use.

Dynamic DNS
Most broadband service providers use Dynamic IP address (DHCP) and these can change frequently. It can be a pain trying to remember what your IP address is, so why not use a Dynamic DNS solution to ensure that your IP address has a more friendly name. This page tells you what it is and what you can do with it. It is also linked to from most of the other pages in this section as it is a very useful service to have.

Firewall Protection
If you are using a broadband connection, you are at more risk from your computer being attacked. Therefore you should have some kind of firewall protection. This page explains the different types and how to choose the right option for your environment.

Email Access (both inbound and outbound)
You obviously want to use email, but your broadband provider may not provide a very satisfactory solution. Therefore why not retain your existing internet account and continue to use that address. This section deals with how you can get over any problems this may cause.

Remote Access to Your Network (VPN etc)
As the network is connected to Internet permanently, why not make use of it and connect to it remotely from elsewhere. Very useful if you need to check something when on a clients site or want to transfer something home when in the office.
It also gives information on what precautions you should take to ensure that your data is not compromised.

Other useful facilities available via a permanent internet connection
Remember now you have a permanent internet connection you can make use of it to schedule automatic anti virus updates, tickers and other useful tools. This section gives you some ideas.

Troubleshooting
If you are having problems with your broadband connection then this page will give you some hints on how to find the problem and resolve it.

Backup Dial up Access
Just in case of failure, you might want to have a backup dial up account. If your broadband access fails, then you can still access the internet.
